The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is right-wing, conservative lobbying group that is responsible for getting the “Stand Your Ground” law passed in over 2 dozen states. Stand Your Ground allowed George Zimmerman, a white man, to after free after killing Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager.
ALEC decided to hold their 40th annual convention in Chicago, so Action Now, Stand Up Chicago, APNC and other social justice organizations staged a “die-in” to show how ALEC’s legislation puts us all in danger! We all wore hoodies with targets on them that said “Repeal Stand Your Ground” and when we got to the Hilton (where the convention was being held) we all fell to the ground and blocked the main entrance with our “die-in.”
Here is a video of the “die-in” to protest Stand Your Ground:
We also joined hundreds of people for a protest outside of the Palmer House Hilton the next day to show ALEC that their oppressive, racist and anti-worker agenda is not welcome in our city!
